Is duplicate content a penalty?
No, there is no duplicate-content penalty in the way people fear. The harm is subtler: signals split across versions, so nothing ranks as well as it could, and crawl budget wasted on copies.
Do I need canonical tags on every page?
Most pages should carry a self-referencing canonical, and duplicates should point at the version you want to rank. What matters is that the whole set of signals agrees, which is where most sites slip.
