Web designConversion rate optimisation

Test what works, on the site you have.

Conversion rate optimisation is not a redesign and it is not a hunch. It is the ongoing, evidenced work of finding where visitors drop off on your current site, testing changes properly and keeping the ones that actually move the numbers.

The short answer

Conversion rate optimisation is the ongoing practice of increasing the share of visitors who take a desired action on an existing website, through research, hypotheses and controlled A/B testing rather than opinion or a full redesign. It combines analytics and session data to find where people drop off, a testing programme to prove which changes help, and disciplined measurement so only genuine wins ship. We run it as a monthly programme measured in validated uplift, never in guessed best practice.

In depth

Conversion rate optimisation, in full.

Conversion rate optimisation gets confused with two other things it is not. It is not a redesign, and it is not a designer's opinion about what looks better. It is a disciplined, ongoing loop: work out from real data where visitors are dropping off, form a specific hypothesis about why, test a change against the current version with live traffic, and keep it only if the numbers prove it helped. The value is in the discipline, because most confident guesses about what will lift conversion turn out, when tested, to do nothing or to hurt.

That is why evidence comes first. Analytics tells you where in the funnel people leave; session recordings and heatmaps often tell you why, showing the form field everyone abandons, the call to action nobody scrolls to, the reassurance that is missing at the moment of doubt. From that we build hypotheses worth testing, ranked by likely impact and ease, rather than a wishlist of tweaks. A good CRO programme spends as much effort deciding what not to test as what to test.

Testing itself has to be honest about statistics. An A/B test only means something with enough traffic and enough time to reach significance, and lower-traffic sites simply cannot test every idea, which is a fact we will tell you rather than run underpowered tests that produce noise dressed up as insight. When a test cannot be run cleanly we say so and find another way, and when a test wins we make sure it did not do so by quietly costing page speed or rankings.

This is optimisation on the site you already have. If you are commissioning a new build and want it designed to convert from the first line of code, that is a different, upfront piece of work we cross-link below. The two fit together, a well-built site gives CRO more to work with, but they are not the same job and we keep them distinct so you are only paying for the one you need.

What it covers

Conversion rate optimisation, broken down.

Analytics and behaviour research

Funnel analysis, session recordings and heatmaps to find where visitors actually drop off and hesitate, so testing is aimed at real friction rather than assumptions about it. This is where every credible programme starts.

Hypotheses and a test roadmap

A prioritised backlog of testable changes, each with a clear hypothesis and expected impact, ranked so we run the tests most likely to matter first rather than whatever is easiest to build.

A/B and multivariate testing

Controlled experiments run against your live traffic, sized and called on statistical significance, so a change ships only when the data shows it genuinely helped. No shipping on a hunch, no calling tests early.

Conversion-focused design for new builds

If you are building or rebuilding rather than optimising, conversion belongs in the design from the start. That is a distinct, upfront piece of work, and it is where CRO principles are baked in rather than tested in later.

Speed and technical health

Page speed is itself a conversion factor, and testing tools can undermine it if handled badly. We keep Core Web Vitals and rankings intact while we test, and treat slow pages as a conversion problem in their own right.

When testing points to a rebuild

Sometimes the data shows a template is beyond tweaking and needs rebuilding. When it does we will say so honestly rather than test around the edges, and a redesign becomes the right next step.

How we run it

The way we run Conversion rate optimisation.

01

Free teardown and scope

We review your analytics, funnels and current conversion paths, find the biggest points of leakage and show you the headline opportunities before you commit to anything.

02

Research and instrument

We set up the analytics, session recording and heatmapping needed to see behaviour clearly, and confirm the site is tracking conversions accurately, because a testing programme is only as good as its measurement.

03

Build the hypothesis backlog

We turn the research into a prioritised list of testable changes, each with a clear hypothesis and expected impact, so we always work on the tests most likely to move the numbers.

04

Test and validate

We run controlled A/B tests against live traffic, sized for significance and left to run long enough to mean something, and keep only the variants the data proves helped.

05

Ship wins, protect the base

Validated wins are implemented cleanly on your site, checked so they do not cost speed or rankings, and the next round of hypotheses is queued from what each test taught us.

06

Measure, report, compound

Monthly reporting tied to conversion rate and the actions that matter to the business, with the roadmap re-prioritised each month around what the tests are actually showing.

Our approach

How we approach Conversion rate optimisation.

Evidence before opinion

We start from what visitors actually do: analytics, funnels, session recordings and heatmaps. Where they hesitate, where they abandon, what they never see. Opinion, including ours, is a hypothesis to test, not a reason to change something.

Test properly or not at all

A real A/B test needs enough traffic, enough time and a clear single hypothesis to mean anything. We size tests honestly, call them on significance rather than impatience, and are candid when your traffic cannot support a given test yet.

Optimise the site you have

This is ongoing work on your existing site, not a rebuild. We change one thing, measure it, and keep it only if it earns its place, so improvement compounds without the risk and cost of throwing out what already works.

Protect SEO and speed while testing

Testing tools and variant code can slow a page or confuse a crawler if handled carelessly. We run tests so they do not tax Core Web Vitals or your rankings, because a conversion win that costs you traffic is not a win.

Why us

Who does the work, and how

Rogue Logic is the trading name of Bryley Ltd. Your CRO programme is run by four senior practitioners with around forty years of combined experience between them, and no juniors experimenting on your revenue. CRO is judgement under statistics: knowing which hypothesis is worth the traffic, when a test has actually reached significance and when a result is noise. That is not a junior task, and it is not guesswork dressed up as best practice. We open with a free teardown because we would rather show you honestly where your site leaks than sell you a testing retainer you cannot yet support.

Senior people, start to finish

The person who reads your data is the person who designs and calls the tests. No account manager relaying results from a junior, and no experiments run by someone learning on your live traffic.

Statistical honesty

We size tests properly, call them on significance rather than impatience, and tell you plainly when your traffic cannot support a given test yet. We would rather run fewer, sound tests than a stream of underpowered ones.

Wins that do not cost you elsewhere

A conversion uplift that quietly slows the site or dents rankings is not a win. We protect speed and SEO while we test, and report against the conversions that matter, not vanity metrics.

Common questions

Conversion rate optimisation: common questions.

What is conversion rate optimisation, and is it a redesign?

CRO is the ongoing work of increasing the share of visitors who take a desired action on your existing site, using research and controlled A/B testing rather than a rebuild. It is deliberately not a redesign. Instead of changing everything on a hunch, it changes one thing at a time, tests it against the current version with live traffic, and keeps it only if the data proves it helped. That discipline is the whole point, because most confident guesses about conversion turn out to be wrong when tested.

How is this different from conversion-focused design?

Conversion-focused design bakes conversion principles into a new build from the start, as an upfront project. CRO is the ongoing testing and optimisation of a site that already exists. One designs for conversion before launch; the other proves and improves conversion after it, with live data. They complement each other, and if you are building rather than optimising, the design service is the right starting point. We keep them separate so you only pay for the one you need.

How much traffic do I need for A/B testing to work?

Enough for a test to reach statistical significance in a reasonable time, which depends on your current conversion rate and the size of the change you are testing. Lower-traffic sites can still benefit from CRO, but through fewer, higher-impact tests and more qualitative research rather than a constant stream of experiments. We will tell you honestly what your traffic can and cannot support, rather than running underpowered tests that produce noise.

Will testing slow my site or hurt my SEO?

It should not, if it is done carefully, and making sure of that is part of the job. Testing tools and variant code can add weight or confuse crawlers when handled badly, so we implement tests to avoid taxing Core Web Vitals or your rankings, and we check for it. A conversion win that costs you organic traffic is not a win, so we treat protecting speed and SEO as part of the work, not an afterthought.

How quickly will I see results from CRO?

The first research often surfaces obvious friction within weeks, but reliable, tested wins take time because a test has to run long enough to reach significance. CRO is a compounding programme, not a one-off fix: each validated change adds a little, and each test teaches the next. A realistic view is steady, evidenced improvement over months, rather than a single dramatic jump anyone can promise up front.

How much does conversion rate optimisation cost?

Our engagements start from £1,500 per month, with scope agreed before you commit rather than sold as a fixed package. The right figure depends on your traffic, how much research and instrumentation the site needs, and how many tests it can realistically support. We scope it against what your site can actually make use of after the teardown, so you are not paying for a testing volume your traffic cannot sustain.
